The Pump House is the last remaining historic building on the old Rowhedge Wharf site.
It was built in 1903 to pump water to the Rowhedge Water Tower, a listed building in Parkfield Street, and is an important part of the historic water infrastructure for the village.
The Pump House is on Colchester Borough Council’s list of local historical buildings.
During 2020 and 2021, the Trust engaged with Hills Building Group (who own the Pump House as part of the site). Our aim was to secure the building as a base for RHT and wider community activities.
Hills asked a large amount for the Trust to purchase or rent the building, which would require considerable financial support to enable the purchase. The Trust, therefore, approached the Heritage Lottery Fund for help, however, their feedback was that they would be unlikely to support the purchase of a property.
The property is now in use by Future Bikes Trailhead, who offer e-bike sales as well as servicing & support for all forms of biking. They have also recently opened a small café within the building.
